Antamina Mine in Ancash, was the largest copper-producing mine in Peru, producing approximately 426.7 thousand tonnes of copper and an estimated 55.6 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Antamina Mine is owned by Glencore Plc, and is due to operate until 2028. The second largest copper-producing mine with an estimated copper production of 402.3 thousand tonnes and an estimated 162.25 mmtpa of ROM, was the Cerro Verde Mine located in Ancash. The Cerro Verde Mine is owned by Freeport-McMoRan Inc, and is due to operate until 2051.
Las Bambas Project located in Apurimac was the third-largest mine, the Toquepala Mine located in Tacna was the fourth-largest mine, and the Antapaccay Mine located in Cusco was the fifth-largest mine, with a total copper production of 383.6 thousand tonnes, 231.2 thousand tonnes and 197 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Las Bambas Project, the Toquepala Mine and the Antapaccay Mine had an estimated ROM production of 59.88 mmtpa, 38.16 mmtpa and 38.45 mmtpa respectively. The Las Bambas Project is owned by China Minmetals Corp which is due to operate until 2038, the Toquepala Mine is owned by Grupo Mexico SAB de CV which is due to operate until 2049 and the Antapaccay Mine is owned by Glencore Plc which is due to operate until 2031.
The five largest copper mines, i.e., Antamina Mine, Cerro Verde Mine, Las Bambas Project, Toquepala Mine, and Antapaccay Mine, cumulatively produced approximately 1,640.8 thousand tonnes of copper, 354.37 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
