Red Dog Mine in Alaska, was the largest zinc-producing mine in United States, producing approximately 500.1 thousand tonnes of zinc and an estimated 4.6 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa) of Run-of-Mine (ROM) in 2021. The Red Dog Mine is owned by Teck Resources Ltd, and is due to operate until 2032. The second largest zinc-producing mine with an estimated zinc production of 111.8 thousand tonnes and an estimated 1.36 mmtpa of ROM, was the Sweetwater Mine located in Alaska. The Sweetwater Mine is owned by The Renco Group, Inc..
Greens Creek Mine located in Alaska was the third-largest mine, the East Tennessee Mines located in Tennessee was the fourth-largest mine, and the Empire State Mines located in New York was the fifth-largest mine, with a total zinc production of 56.8 thousand tonnes, 40.8 thousand tonnes and 38.7 thousand tonnes, respectively, in 2021. The Greens Creek Mine, the East Tennessee Mines and the Empire State Mines had an estimated ROM production of 0.86 mmtpa, 1.41 mmtpa and 0.35 mmtpa respectively. The Greens Creek Mine is owned by Hecla Mining Co which is due to operate until 2031, the East Tennessee Mines is owned by Nyrstar NV and the Empire State Mines is owned by Titan Mining Corporation which is due to operate until 2026.
The five largest zinc mines, i.e., Red Dog Mine, Sweetwater Mine, Greens Creek Mine, East Tennessee Mines, and Empire State Mines, cumulatively produced approximately 748.2 thousand tonnes of zinc, 8.60 mmtpa of ROM in 2021.
